And on Saturday, May 19th booths with a variety of vendors (and your very own Christian County Democrats!) will open at 9am. Entertainment begins at 10am with the Sucker Day meal kicking off at noon. The meal consists of Sucker Fish or BBQ Beef, Home-made Cole Slaw, Deep-Fried Potatoes, Home-Made Baked Beans, Slice of Bread, and Drink. All this for only $7.50 per person. This annual event on Main Street has been taking place since 1957. Check out the history and schedule details at their website — www.nixasuckerday.org.

Since the Christian County Democratic Central Committee along with the Democrat Club of Christian County will have a booth at this event, we need volunteers to staff the booth on Saturday. We will have bumper stickers and other Democrat information to share with our neighbors, and will be raffling off a Christian County Democrats t-shirt with Senator Claire McCaskill’s statement: “Christian County Dems Rock — Claire McCaskill.”

If you are interested in helping us out, please call Betty Maples at 725-3001. But if you can’t volunteer, please do come by the booth and help support your fellow Democrats!

Jackson Days are April 20th and 21st this year at the Howard Johnson’s on South Glenstone in Springfield (formerly Clarion). This event is sponsored by the Greene County Democratic Central Committee to celebrate the Democratic Party.

Christian County Democrats will be staffing our own booth on Friday night, 5-7pm, and on Saturday morning and afternoon. We will raffle off a Christian County Democrats t-shirt autographed by Claire McCaskill! Plenty of t-shirts and bumper stickers will also be available.

Friday evening local democratic organizations and labor unions sponsor various hospitality rooms. It is also auction night, with a silent auction of many donated items and a live auction for the very special items. All proceeds go to help support the Greene County Democratic Central Committee.

Saturday morning starts with a breakfast sponsored by the Democratic Alliance. This year’s speaker is Representative Jason Kander, Democratic candidate for the Missouri Secretary of State. Saturday evening ends with the Jackson Days Banquet. Democrats come from across the state to attend. This year’s main speaker is Senator Claire McCaskill.

Approximately 15 people signed up to receive information about upcoming Democratic events in Christian County. Numerous bumper stickers, buttons, and brochures were taken to spread the word. We also assisted many new voters in registering for the August elections! Thanks to our fellow members who helped man the two booths in March as we are extending our outreach and reminding Christian County that we Democrats are a viable force to reckon with. These opportunities also introduce our local candidates to potential voters and supporters.

The law expands the government’s Medicaid system to cover some who are not currently insured, but it also greatly expands private insurance. After the law takes effect, the government’s share of all spending on health care will still remain well under half, rising less than 4 percentage points, according to official projections.”
