April Election in Christian County

On February 24, 2018, in Election, Event, Uncategorized, by Christian County Democrats

Only one contested race (Sparta)in 6 municipalities and only 4 contested races for school boards (Billings, Chadwick, Spokane, and Sparta).

I voted in Christian County

Billings: A new mayoral candidate, David Rauch, is running uncontested. Incumbents Holly Fender, Mickey Brown, and Jessie Coker will remain in their seats for 2 more years. Four people are running for two school board seats: Lyndell Plowman, Chris Bos, Mike Tomlinson, and Karley Reeves.

Chadwick: School District has 3 people running for two open seats: Chad Sallee, Andrew Rice, and Colton Jones.

Clever: Looks like the current Mayor Jaredd King and two alderman, Jim McWilliams and Charlene Fraser are running again uncontested. Incumbents Justin Peebles and Chris Garrett will keep their School District seats.

Highlandville: No changes; George Pezold and Joe Gault are running unopposed. NO ELECTION.

Nixa: No contested races for city council or school board. Scott Perryman will replace Ryan Keating on the City Council and Matthew Barker will keep his seat. School board candidates RaeLynn Anderson and Josh Roberts will retain their seats.

Ozark: Only incumbents filed to keep their seats, so Nathan Posten, Bruce Galloway, and Heather Alder will remain on the Board of Aldermen and Aaron Johns and Patty Quessenberry will stay on the School Board.

Sparta: Valorie Watts is running uncontested for Ward 1 alderman, but in Ward 2 voters will decide between Steve Otten and Rosalie Watts. There are three people running for two positions on the School Board: Betty Braden,  Dennis Lilly, and Jacob Finney.

Spokane: School Board has four candidates running for two seats: Derek Hime, Carrie Rantz, Linda Mae Goodall, and Aaron Winslow.

Other items on the ballot: Christian County Health Dept. Board of Directors, Fremont Hills and Saddlebrooke municipal boards, road commissioners in various road districts, board of directors of local fire districts, use taxes for the cities of Ozark and Nixa, and Ozarks Technical Community College property tax levies.

The Use Taxes: these would be a local sales tax on transactions that individuals and businesses conduct with out-of-state vendors, including catalog and direct market sales. This would include sales tax for online purchases. For more information, see the Christian County Headliner.

The OTC tax levies: 2 property tax levies will be on the April ballot—Proposition A will ask voters to renew the existing levy extending the 5-cent existing tax to fund technical and healthcare operations at the school. Proposition B would increase their total levy from 15-cents per $100 assessed value to 20-cents. If both ballot measures are approved, the levy on a $100,000 home will increase from approximately $30 per year to about $40 per year; the cost for a similarly-assessed commercial property will rise from about $48 annually to $64. Voters in Clever R-V, Ozark R-VI, and Nixa school districts are eligible to cast ballots on these measures. For more information, see the Christian County Headliner.
