Get your sample ballot for the November 8th Christian County Election.

Besides voting for our First Female President, you will be voting on US Senator (Jason Kander) and US Representative (Genevieve Williams), as well as Missouri state officers. You will also be able to vote for your District State Representative (and if you live in the 140th you have Jim Billedo on the ticket!), the 38th Circuit Judge, and the retention of certain judges. You will be also be voting for the Christian County elections offices of Commissioner (and if you live in eastern Christian County, you have Sue Ann Childers on the ticket!), Sheriff, Assessor, Treasurer, Coroner, and Public Administrator.  And you will vote on Constitutional Amendments (1,2,3,4, & 6) and Proposition A.

Recommendations on Ballot Issues:

Amendment 1: Continues funding soil and water conservation for state parks and historic sites for the next 10 years. RECOMMENDATION: YES

Amendment 2: Limits campaign contributions. But language is not clear; it could ban labor unions contributing, but allow corporations. Supported by Fred Sauer, author of “How Liberalism, a euphemism for socialism, destroys peoples and nations.” RECOMMENDATION: NO

Amendment 3: Tax on cigarettes, 75% for early childhood education. Would limit taxes on cigarettes and give public monies to private and religious schools. Supported by large tobacco companies. Opposed by MO Nat. Education Association, American Lung Association, and American Heart Asssociation. RECOMMENDATION: NO

Amendment 4: Prevents new state or local sales/use tax on any service or transaction. It could block future taxes on new industries, limiting state and local entities with budget problems. Supported by MO Associations of Home Inspectors, Cattlemen, Funeral Directors, Broadcasters, Bankers, etc. Opposed by MO Municipal League and the Budget Project. RECOMMENDATION: NO

Proposition A: Tax on cigarettes, funding transportation infrastructure. This competes with Amendment 1, but also limits taxes on cigarettes. Supported by MO Petroleum Markets and Convenience Store Association. Opposed by Cancer Society, MO American Lung Association, American Heart Association, etc.

Amendment 6: Voters “may” be required to verify their identity, citizenship and residence with a photo id. This would suppress voters, especially minorities, the elderly, the poor, and students. There is no real evidence of voter fraud, and it will be difficult for people to get these ids. Republicans nationwide are pushing this issue in order to suppress Democrat voters. Democrats nationwide strongly oppose it. RECOMMENDATION: NO

For more information check out the VOTERS GUIDE by the League of Women Voters. You may go to their website and put in your address, or pick one up at your local library. Also, checkout the Christian County Headliner for October 26th. They have interviewed local candidates and presented the pros and cons of the ballot issues.

Our Christmas Party Remembered

On December 16, 2015, in Candidates, Democratic Party, Election, Event, Uncategorized, by Christian County Democrats

December 5th at the Fremont Hills Country Club, the Christian County Democratic Central Committee had a very successful fundraiser/party. We had two Missouri Democratic candidates and our Democratic County Commissioner speaking, a popular local singer and storyteller entertaining, and the Cattywampus Band enlivening it all.  And we all agreed that the dinner provided by Fremont Hills was excellent.

Sue Ann Childers (Christian County Commissioner) began the talks and said she was open to listening to our concerns. Dr. Brad Bradshaw (running for Missouri Lt. Governor) received applause for his stance on Medicaid expansion and he told us of his plans for making Missouri #1 in medical research. Teresa Hensley (running for Missouri Attorney General) spoke to us about her experience as a prosecutor in Cass County and her dedication to seeking justice for all. Marideth Sisco (Ozark storyteller and singer) criticized the hostile environment of political discourse today and challenged us to question those telling untruths. She also sang a couple of her favorite songs. The Cattywampus Band played during dinner and after speeches.

Baskets and pies (prepared by our hardworking members) were auctioned off by Matt Patterson, and silent auction items were awarded to the highest bidder. The Jerry Litton Award was presented to Diane and Kent Stalder by David Lee who spoke of their dedication to Christian County Democrats.

Thanks to everyone who participated and everyone who helped make this lovely party a success (especially the Billedo family)!
